Types of Colon Polyps

colonpolypsFinding colon polyps may be a cause for concern. It begs the question of possible colon cancer.

There are several different types of colon polyps. These include hyperplastic polyps, adenomatous polyps, and malignant polyps. The first two are the most commonly found polyps, however other polyps may be found although it is rare.

Hyperplastic polyps are usually found in the end of the colon. They are small and and do not have the possibility of being malignant or becoming malignant. These types of colon polyps usually have to be removed or biopsied to be looked at under a microscope, as they are not easily distinguishable from an adenomatous polyp. These types of colon polyps are not something to be worried about.

Adenomatous polyps consist of about two thirds of all polyps found. Although these polyps do have the ability to turn into cancer, they usually do not. These polyps are too looked at under a microscope and are usually determined by the size, general appearance, and specific features.

Usually if an adenomatous polyp is larger, it has a bigger possiblilty of becoming cancerous. Again, these types of colon polyps are examined under a microscope to determine the extent of the cancer. Based on the extent of the cancer is what the treatment is decided on.

Colon polyps do not usually cause any symptoms for anyone to look for and are usually detected through a colonoscopy. They can also be detected through types of x-rays, however some are too small to see through this method. A colonoscopy is the best way to find out if there are any polyps in the colon, as this allows the doctor performing the procedure to see the entire lining of the colon and remove any polyps he/she may come across. This procedure is simple as a small, thin tube with a camera is inserted into the anus and runs along the lining of the colon to look for the polyps.
